The most recent standard for creating web pages is HTML5. This latest version of HTML makes it possible, for the first time, to play video right in a browser without using plug–ins such as Flash Player. In this technology scouting, the possibilities of HTML5 in the area of video are considered, and recommendations are made to the SURFnet/Kennisnet communities regarding the support of HTML5 for web video.
This exploratory technology study explores the possibilities of (1) providing content from MediaMosa publicly by making use of web services and (2) consuming data from other sources and integrating these into MediaMosa content.
MediaMosa facilitates end user services (such as SURFmedia) by providing access to and use of videos and provides storage, transcoding and streaming services.
This exploratory study examines the possibilities of linking various MediaMosa installations. MediaMosa facilitates end user services (such as SURFmedia) by providing access to videos and the ability to use these, and provides storage, transcoding and streaming services. Using the Open API, as investigated in the exploratory study into the technology of ‘Open Web services’, MediaMosa will be able to facilitate the use of videos to end users as well. A MediaMosa link should make it possible to access videos from multiple MediaMosa installations through a single interface.
With the growth of educational video content being available, the demand for more effective ways to increase the usability of online video content also rises. Usability will be increased when techniques like video transcription lead to improved metadata and search ability.
In 2010 SURFnet has been performing a Technology Scouting project with the subject how MediaMosa and Opencast Matterhorn can co-act. This Technology Scouting project should give an answer to the following questions:
Video speelt een grote rol in de wijze waarop docenten kennis overbrengen en de manier waarop jongeren zelf kennis construeren en vastleggen. SURFnet en Kennisnet maken voor beheer en distributie van video gebruik van het VP-Core platform dat is gebaseerd op de gezamenlijk ontwikkelde MediaMosa software.
Op dit moment is MediaMosa ingericht als videoplatform voor on demand video’s. Om het mogelijk te maken dat (onderwijs)instellingen met een eigen video bron het materiaal live afgeschermd kunnen distribueren met behulp van de MediaMosa infrastructuur, is een Proof of Concept uitgevoerd, waarin de mogelijkheden hiervoor zijn onderzocht. In de Proof of Concept is een koppeling gemaakt tussen MediaMosa en het SURFnet live streaming platform (het SURFnet CDN), zodat MediaMosa gebruik kon maken van de streaming componenten van dit platform.
MediaMosa is the open source media content management system developed by SURFnet, Kennisnet and Madcap and is used on their VP-Core platform to deliver video services to their users. The VP-Core video platform was implemented using MediaMosa. This technology scouting investigates which adaptations are required in MediaMosa to also be able to store and process media other than video.
De huidige opzet van MediaMosa ondersteunt het uploaden van videobestanden naar één storage locatie. Deze technology scout is uitgevoerd om te bezien of het in de toekomst mogelijk zou zijn om video (en ander materiaal) van en naar andere storage locaties te distribueren. Dit maakt het mogelijk om bestanden op basis van bepaalde criteria (zoals kwaliteit of populariteit) op een specifieke storage (die sneller maar duurder of juist trager maar goedkoper is) locatie op te slaan.
